Static or dynamic QR code? The difference in two minutes

They look the same and both scan with a phone camera. You only notice the difference when something needs to change after printing.

The difference in one sentence

A static code has the address written into it, so it can never change. A dynamic code only holds a short link like qrvia.app/q/K7M2QX, which redirects to wherever you set it in your account.

Paste your own link and see both codes side by side. With a long address, the static code gets noticeably denser:

Static

Dynamic

25 × 25 modules

69% fewer modules

A denser code isn't broken, it just needs to be printed bigger and is more sensitive to print quality. On a small business card or sticker, that's the difference between a code that reads instantly and one where people patiently wave their phone around.

When static is all you need

  • WiFi, contact cards (vCard), payments. The data has to live inside the code, so dynamic doesn't even apply.
  • A link that will definitely never change, like your company home page or Instagram profile.
  • One-off things: a code in a presentation, an e-mail or on a stag-party T-shirt.

Static codes on QRvia are free, need no sign-up and never stop working. They don't depend on us at all, because the address is part of the image.

When dynamic pays off

  • Anything printed in volume: flyers, packaging, catalogues, menus. A typo in the address would otherwise mean a reprint.
  • Content that changes: lunch specials, current offers, price lists, event schedules.
  • When you want numbers. See how many people scanned, on which days and from which devices. Now you know whether the flyer was worth it.
  • When you don't know the final destination yet. Print the code now and fill in the link later.

Three questions, answer yes or no

  1. 1.Could the destination change after printing (prices, menu, an offer)?
  2. 2.Are you printing more than a handful, or on pricier material?
  3. 3.Do you want to know how many people scanned it?

What happens if you stop paying

A fair question that many services answer vaguely. Here is how it works with us: dynamic codes keep working for 30 days after your subscription ends, and we e-mail you before they are switched off. In that time you can renew or point the code somewhere else. You can't create new dynamic codes without a subscription; static codes work forever.

Questions people ask

Can a static code be turned into a dynamic one later?⌄

No, a printed static code can't be changed. You can create a new dynamic code and gradually replace the old printed materials.

Is a dynamic code slower?⌄

It adds one quick redirect, usually under a tenth of a second. Nobody will notice.

Will a static code ever stop working?⌄

No. It works as long as the page it points to exists, even if QRvia were to shut down.

How much does a dynamic code cost?⌄

Dynamic codes are part of the Pro plan: 14 days free, then €14.99 a month or €89 a year. You don't pay per code.
